Mother
written and directed by Maia Scalia
Upon receiving a disturbing email from her son, a mother drives frantically through traffic in a race against time to his school hoping to avert the unimaginable.
The Story
Having just received an email containing a disturbing video from her son, Julie weaves wildly through traffic in a race against time to find him. As she narrowly avoids collisions and gets stuck in heavy traffic, Julie makes a series of phone-calls in a bid to piece together what is happening.
After being put on hold by the police department, invalidated by her ex-husband and gaslit by her son's therapist, Julie hears a news report citing a gunman in a blue Acura has opened fire on the campus of a university. Recognizing her son’s car and his university, Julie's horror solidifies as she makes a last attempt to reach him.
A note from the director
MOTHER is an exploration of certain themes I am drawn to in storytelling—experiences of grief, blame and isolation. I wanted to tell a story about the complexities of being the mother of a child who commits an atrocious crime and more specifically the acute, and often never explored, experience of being the mother of a school shooter. I want the film to feel intense and claustrophobic with handheld camera movements, extreme close ups of Julie. Setting it in the bright morning light, forces the audience to live through every moment of Julie’s horror along with her. We rarely experience such tragedy from the mother’s point of view, which brings a more personal resonance to the cultural phenomena of mass shootings. By putting the viewer in the mother’s shoes for these 13 minutes, I hope to evoke empathy and broaden the dialogue we have around gun violence and mental health.
